County Development

The regional development study for the county of Dolj – located in western Romania on one of the main development axes – was carried out in co-operation with local experts. Based on document study and numerous, comprehensive face-to-face interviews, a good potential was identified. Industry accounted for 56% of local output (dominated by power, chemicals, vehicles and light industries), agriculture took a 35% share and services accounted for only 9%. Co-operation between industry, research institutes and Craiova University appeared well developed – a key prerequisite for innovation and competitiveness. Particularly good potential was seen in the following fields: agro-industries, automotive, electricals (transformers, switchgears, railway equipment). Transport infrastructure needed to be upgraded (road and rail) or developed (civilian use of a military air base). Co-operation between the public and private sectors required improvement. Efforts were underway to create a regional development agency. GOPA, Bad Homburg (Germany)
